Why we ran this test
Outdoor repairs fail when sun, heat, moisture and temperature swings break down the tape or its adhesive. Florida is one of the harshest places in the United States for that kind of exposure, with intense UV and surface temperatures that regularly exceed 100°F, as well as regular moisture and rainfall. We wanted to know how our All-Weather Gorilla Tape holds up when it is left in those conditions for years.
How we tested it
Product
Holds
Location
Florida
Duration
3 years
Substrates
Aluminum, PVC
Tapes Tested
Gorilla All-Weather Tape and leading competitor all-weather tape, applied in identical strips
Exposure
Direct sun and rain
Application
Both tapes applied the same way on the same day
What the tapes looked like throughout the 3 years
Leading competitor all-weather tape on aluminum:
- 1 year: The tape is still on the panel but wrinkled and rippled, with the surface starting to bubble.
- 2 years: The backing has peeled on all corners and folded over itself on 3/4 corners.
- 3 years: The backing of the tape is completely gone. Only a strip of loose cloth fibers and adhesive residue remains.

All-Weather Gorilla Tape on aluminum:
- 1 year: The tape lies flat and fully bonded. The black surface is uniform, with only a few faint scratches.
- 2 years: The tape is still flat with clean edges.
- 3 years: The tape is still in place and fully bonded, with edges intact.

Leading competitor all-weather tape on PVC:
- 1 year: The tape is still bonded but heavily rippled, and the edges are starting to lift.
- 2 years: The tape has shrunk and curled into a narrow rolled strip.
- 3 years: The tape is completely distentigrated. Only faint marks are left on the PVC panel.

All-Weather Gorilla Tape on PVC:
- 1 year: The tape is smooth, flat, and fully bonded to the PVC panel.
- 2 years: The tape is unchanged, with clean edges and a smooth surface.
- 3 years: The tape is still firmly bonded and flat. There is only light surface scuffing and a slight fade in color.

What this means for your outdoor projects and fixes
A tape that holds up through 3 years of Florida sun, moisture and rain is built for the jobs where other tapes give out: sealing and patching, securing items on roofs and trailers, repairing gutters, and fixing anything exposed to sun, heat, and rain. Gorilla All-Weather Tape is designed for outdoor repairs that must endure sun, rain, and shifting temperatures. It is made with a high strength butyl adhesive and a weather resistant shell. This construction prevents the drying, cracking, and peeling often caused by sunlight, heat, cold, and moisture.
Uses for All-Weather Gorilla Tape
- Tarps and plastic sheeting
- RVs and campers
- Patching seams, awnings, screens, and more.
- Automotive
- Emergency repairs on bumpers, trim, splash guards, and more.
- Boats and marine gear
- General outdoor repairs
- Tarps, covers, patio furniture, garden equipment, and more.
Some tips and limitations
- It's not electrical tape.
- Watch the temperature when you apply it. It can handle temperatures from 0°F to 200°F, but it should be applied when it's above 40°F.
- Press it down hard. It can feel less sticky than Heavy Duty Gorilla Tape. The butyl adhesive starts out less tacky but it builds a very strong permanent bond over time, so press it down firmly on a clean, dry surface.
