Gorilla Tape is built with a three-layer construction that standard duct tape simply doesn't match: a weather-resistant outer shell, a reinforced fabric backing, and an adhesive layer that's twice as thick as what you'll find on conventional duct tape. That extra adhesive thickness is what allows it to grip uneven, rough, and porous surfaces where regular duct tape gives up. The backing layers are also slightly offset during manufacturing, which gives the tape its unusual combination of hand-tearability and high tensile strength.

Start with a clean, dry surface — even a quick wipe-down makes a measurable difference in adhesion. Once applied, press the tape down firmly and rub the entire length of it, paying extra attention to the edges. The adhesive continues to cure and strengthen over the first 24 hours, so for critical repairs, give it time before putting it under load. All-Weather Gorilla Tape in particular benefits from aggressive rubbing at application, since its butyl adhesive is less immediately tacky than the standard formula but develops an exceptionally strong permanent bond over time.

Gorilla Tape can be used on many automotive surfaces for temporary repairs — securing trim, patching tears, bundling cables — but it's not designed as a long-term automotive solution and may leave adhesive residue on paint or clear coat if left in place for an extended period or exposed to prolonged heat. Always test on a small inconspicuous area first, and for anything involving painted surfaces, remove the tape before residue has a chance to set.
